OpenFront Team Strategy Guide

In team games your mistakes are shared. Roles, spawn spacing and one clear plan matter more than individual mechanics.

Quick answer: agree roles before the spawn phase, spawn so your territories form one continuous front rather than three separate islands, and let the economically strongest member build the income while the others hold borders. In 2v2, one player pushing alone is the most common way to lose.

Roles that work

AnchorHold the shared front lineDefence posts, citiesMaking attacks on your side unprofitable
EconomyHighest gold incomeFactories, ports, citiesFunding everyone's buildings and weapons
StrikerTake tiles on the decisive axisCities, then weaponsConverting the anchor's safety into map control
NavalOwn the water between you and the enemyPorts, warshipsProtecting trade and enabling landings

Roles are a starting frame, not a script: on small maps two players often have to cover all four jobs between them, and the v0.33 ranked 2v2 format is exactly that situation.

Spawn coordination

  1. Spawn adjacent, not spread — connected territory means one shared border and no gaps for a third player to exploit.
  2. Put the anchor on the front — the player facing the enemy builds defence; the player behind them builds income.
  3. Leave one member with a safe economic rear — a protected economy is how a team out-produces a larger coalition.
  4. Check for pre-made coalitions — if two neighbours look coordinated, your team's first decision is whether to contest them or expand the other way.

Fighting as a team

  • Push together or not at all — two half-strength attacks into a defence post are two losses; one combined push is a breach.
  • Use the sea as a shared asset — allied ports multiply trade value and give you a second axis against a landlocked opponent. Naval strategy
  • Share information, not just territory — who is weakening, where the stack is thin, which neighbour just broke an alliance.
  • Decide who nukes — nuclear spending is a team budget item; one silo in the right hands beats three half-funded ones. Buildings

Ranked 1v1 and 2v2

Ranked formats arrived with the v0.33 line and are much tighter than public games: smaller maps, a known opponent and far less room for economy-only play. Two habits carry over from public lobbies — raise the attack ratio only for a decisive push, and keep a reserve for the counter-attack that always follows a successful advance. Treat any specific ranked tuning as version-sensitive; the results of one patch do not describe the next.

Common team mistakes

  • Three players expanding in three directions and defending three separate fronts.
  • One member building an economy with no protection and donating it to the first attacker.
  • Splitting attacks by turn instead of concentrating them on one border.
  • Ignoring the sea in a team game, which hands the enemy a free flank and your trade routes.

FAQ

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

How should teams spawn?

Adjacent, so your territories form one continuous front. Spawning apart creates separate wars instead of one shared one.

Is there ranked play?

Yes — ranked 1v1 and 2v2 arrived with the v0.33 line. Formats and tuning are patch-sensitive.

Who should build the economy on a team?

Usually the member with the safest rear; the member facing the enemy should build defence and cities instead.

How do we attack together?

Concentrate on one border in one window: combined stacks break defence posts that would stop either attack alone.
