How to Play OpenFront

The rules-and-decisions page: learn what happens in a match before you optimise how to win one.

A match is a sequence of territory, army, economy and border decisions. OpenFront does not use a persistent character build: your position, land and buildings reset with the lobby. Use this page for the rules and flow; use the beginner guide for a first-match checklist and How to Win for deeper strategy.

The match flow in eight decisions

  1. Choose a spawn — prefer room to expand and a useful border shape over a position that merely looks safe.
  2. Claim nearby neutral land — early territory raises your army ceiling and gives you more options.
  3. Read the neighbours — identify the border that can be defended and the one that will drain your army.
  4. Keep a troop reserve — an attack that empties your home border can turn a small gain into elimination.
  5. Raise the ceiling — cities make a larger army possible; do not treat every gold purchase as an attack purchase.
  6. Pick one useful front — concentrate pressure instead of opening several weak borders at once.
  7. Match buildings to the problem — ports need water access, factories and trade need a route, and defence belongs on a real border.
  8. Protect the endgame — hold the majority, keep comeback routes closed and do not let a new border outrun your income.

What the map is telling you

  • Territory controls your room to grow and the borders you must defend.
  • Terrain changes the cost and speed of an attack; check the terrain before committing a large stack.
  • Water access is a strategic route, not a cosmetic feature. It can create a landing, a trade path or a vulnerable flank.
  • Neighbour quality matters as much as neighbour distance: a quiet border is often worth more than a short route into a strong opponent.

Modes change the decision, not the core loop

Free For All rewards border reading and temporary diplomacy. Team games reward adjacent spawns, shared fronts and clear roles. Ranked and private lobbies can change the map, timers or economy, so read the live lobby settings before applying a rule from a public match.

Common first-match mistakes

  • Attacking because the target is nearby without checking terrain, army reserve or the next border.
  • Building a port with no useful water route, or a defence post where no opponent can reach you.
  • Spreading attacks across several borders instead of finishing one valuable route.
  • Treating a community heuristic as a hard rule when the lobby settings or current build say otherwise.

FAQ

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

What should I do first in OpenFront?

Choose a spawn with expansion options, claim nearby neutral land, then check your neighbours before committing to a fight.

How do I grow my army?

Territory and cities raise the maximum army; the troop-growth page explains the current build mechanics and the community heuristics separately.

Should I build a city or attack first?

Compare the border and your reserve. A city is usually valuable when it raises the ceiling enough to make the next safe attack possible; the correct choice depends on the map.

How do I use the sea?

You need useful water access and a route that can become secure. Read naval strategy before buying a port for a speculative landing.

What is different in team games?

Spawn near your team, keep one connected front where possible and assign economy, defence and pressure roles instead of duplicating every building.
